Radial Gate

The radial gate consists of a skin plate which is formed into a circular segment that rotates on a pivot.

The water load passes through radial arms and through trunnion pins, resulting in no unbalanced moment to be overcome when hoisting the gate.

Used on large waterway passages where the presence of lifting gates is impossible.

Pros

  • Compact design
  • Less hoisting capacity required
  • No possibility of trash accumulation in wheels
  • Smaller overhead structure
  • Better flow condition around embedded parts
  • Gravity closure
  • Operating mechanism provides effort only when raised (single action)
  • Easy operation under unbalanced heads

Cons

  • Flume walls must extend downstream at sufficient height to provide attachment for the gate trunnions
  • Gates water load is transmitted to anchors in the concrete waterway walls
  • Increased fabrication complexity
